Phillip Dearden – BDO (Isle of Man) LLC
Since 1991 Phillip has focused on providing offshore tax planning advice. He provides compliance and consultancy services for individuals, family trusts and corporate groups. He specialises in the offshore aspects of UK tax including residence, domicile, non-resident settlements and foreign investment into the UK. He is also highly experienced in tax authority investigations with an offshore flavour.
Phillip is a joint author of ‘Taxation in the Channel Islands and in the Isle of Man.

Helen Woods BDO (Isle of Man) LLC
Helen provides UK and Isle of Man compliance and consultancy services for individuals and trusts, offshore tax planning and estate planning for UK and Isle of Man individuals. She also advises on UK and Isle of Man residence and domicile issues.
With many years of experience in tax Helen is well placed to advise on a variety of Isle of Man and UK tax issues, specialising in private client tax work.

Carolyn Gelling – Thomas Miller Investment (Isle of Man) Limited
Carolyn is a technical investment manager by training and a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment. She holds extensive experience in the preparation and management of bespoke investment portfolios for private clients and their structures and has more recently been appointed as Head of TMI’s Collective Investment Funds business.

Tom Richards – Thomas Miller Investment (Isle of Man) Limited
Tom is a Director and Head of Private Investment Management (Offshore) at TMI. He is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment and holds an MSc (Distinction) in International Banking & Finance. He has extensive experience with the management of UK and international private client, trust structure, pension fund and investment company assets and professional advisor relationships.

HMRC’s focus on offshore jurisdictions

Tax investigation experts Andrew McKenna and Andrew Walker, both Partners at Smith & Williamson LLP are visiting the Island on 15 May and will present to the ICSA members and guests on the topic “HMRC’s focus on offshore jurisdictions” at a CPD event at the Claremont Hotel in Douglas, sponsored by Smith & Williamson LLP.

Tax investigations specialist Andrew Walker previously spent time working with HM Revenue & Customs dealing with suspected serious tax fraud and worked as part of the criminal prosecution group.  Since leaving HMRC he has worked in professional practice acting for a wide range of clients either under investigation or under the threat of investigation. This includes cases with Local Compliance, Charities Assets and Residence, High Net Worth Teams, Civil Investigation or Fraud Teams (CIF), Specialist Investigations (SI) and Revenue Prosecution Office (RCPO). Andrew has successfully guided many individuals through the Liechtenstein Disclosure Facility (LDF) and is a specialist in the UK-Switzerland tax agreement.

Andrew McKenna was previously a senior officer in HMRC working in Special Civil Investigations (now Specialist Investigations), undertaking complicated enquiries into cases of international tax fraud and tax avoidance. A well known expert in tax investigations, he specialises in HMRC’s information powers; particularly bank information notices and information exchange. He has assisted many individuals, trusts and companies subject to HMRC enquiries, negotiating successfully on behalf of his clients to reach pragmatic and beneficial solutions. In addition to this, Andrew proactively advises clients on residency, domicile and business structuring which aims to ensure UK and offshore compliance and that any business and personal tax planning and structuring is implemented to meet the required tax regulatory burdens in the UK and overseas.

Paul Hotchkiss will return to the ICSA on 10 April to give a presentation to members and guests titled:’ Isle of Man UK disclosure facility: Innocent mistakes and oversights’ at the Claremont Hotel in Douglas, and sponsored by Hotchkiss Associates.

Coupled with the spectre of the IOM-UK Inter-Governmental Agreement, the Isle of Man disclosure facility is one of the most significant developments for the Isle of Man in recent times.  The IoMDF presents opportunities for the Fiduciaries and their clients to regularise any historic tax matters quickly and easily  - anyone at any level in the C/TSP business will consider this briefing essential and it is anticipated that places will be  taken up quickly.

Paul Hotchkiss is a former tax partner in KPMG and established his own company, Hotchkiss Associates Limited, in 2010 and is based in the Isle of Man. He is a Chartered Certified Accountant, Trust and Estate Practitioner and a UK Chartered Tax Adviser. He is currently the Chairman of the Isle of Man branch of STEP and was the inaugural Chairman of the Isle of Man branch of the Chartered Institute of Taxation. Paul specialises in four main areas:

  • UK private client tax services covering such matters as UK residence domicile and the taxation of trusts and companies established for families;
  • Inward investment into the UK by non-UK resident individuals, trusts and companies (including funds);
  • The taxation and international structuring of offshore funds and related matters; and
  • Tax investigations, which includes assisting individuals, trustees and directors of companies to deal with HMRC enquiries into their tax affairs.
